Today we’re taking the Chalmette ferry across the Mississippi River on a mutual aid delivery run. It’s always a stark contrast: the calm of being on the water with the refinery backdrop. But today we’re appreciating this watery shortcut to the West Bank 💙
Happy 1 Year Anniversary, Imagine Mutual Aid! To celebrate, we’re doing something fun and COVID safe: a scavenger hunt.

Here’s how it works:
🍊 We’ll hide a candle somewhere around New Orleans, prioritizing spots with nature and water.
🍊 We’ll post hints + a picture of it in our Stories.
🍊 If you find it, you get to keep it!
🍊 Each candle has a note with a quick/easy question. Post your answer and tag us in it asap — this helps folks know when to stop looking.

Our shared #ImagineMutualAid history, created by each of you:
🍊 The Mutual Aid Response Network started its journey in early 2019, alongside a group of organizers across the South. We exist both online and offline. #SouthernPeoplesPower
🍊 "Imagine Mutual Aid (New Orleans)" launched on Facebook in response to COVID-19 on March 15, 2020. Our anniversary was technically this past Monday!
🍊 In our first month of opening, we grew an online community of over 2,000 New Orleanians — and used the group to connect with each other over 5,000 times.
🍊 When Hurricane Laura hit, we opened the group's "doors" to an additional 1,000 folks who evacuated here from Southwest Louisiana. Together we facilitated another 5k interactions within the first week of landfall.
🍊 We’ve looked out for each other over the past year by providing housing, medicine, food, hurricane prep tips, storm relief, mutual aid training, emotional support — you name it, and one of you probably did it.

Y'all are amazing.
Now it’s time to celebrate!
Spotted: A-frame house with a small elevation on the beautiful Tangipahoa River — or as we river folks call it, “The Tangi”.

Various sources tell us that the first inhabitants here were the Choctaw, and that “Tangipahoa” means “corncob gatherers” or “corncob people.” This would be a place where Native people would (and still do) hunt wild game, gather sassafras leaves to make gumbo filé, and make baskets beautifully colored by nearby red oak. These would be taken to nearby trading posts, including Bulbancha (New Orleans), and exchanged for groceries and other supplies.

🍊Do you have a story about the Tangi or surrounding areas? Let us know in the comments!
Tent and tarps needed for unhoused folks in the CBD. Food and blankets also welcome. DM us if you have and can deliver any of the above supplies — we’ll put you directly in touch with this member of our #MutualAid group to coordinate. Or search for this post in “Imagine Mutual Aid (New Orleans)” on Facebook, and directly connect without having to go through us!

Many thanks to everyone who has been donating and organizing with us for nearly a year now ❤️✨

A couple requests from our #MutualAid group on Facebook this morning (and yes, with 5000 members, we’re still going strong!). In the group, folks have the autonomy to say exactly what they need — instead of others prescribing it for them. Every human deserves autonomy and a voice in times of crisis, whether that crisis is a storm, a pandemic, or climate change. We are practicing the world that we want to see. Click the link in our bio to join the group, and ask for or offer support!

🍊Reminder that our group’s name on FB is “Imagine Mutual Aid (New Orleans)”. If you’re looking for us, double check the group title to make sure you found the right one!
A reminder that the work is ongoing. Give yourself a break. Trust artists. Pick the work back up tomorrow.

We’re listening to @wwoz_neworleans today for some local joy, but do what feels good to you! ⚜️🎷🎵
